Information for Authors

Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission’s compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.

  • The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
  • The submission file is in OpenOffice, Microsoft Word, or RTF document file format.
  • Where available, URLs for the references have been provided.
  • The text is single-spaced; uses a 12-point font; employs italics, rather than underlining (except with URL addresses); and all illustrations, figures, and tables are placed within the text at the appropriate points, rather than at the end.
  • The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines.

Author Guidelines

The Nigerian Journal of Physiological Scienecs accepts Full length original research article, short communication as well as review for publication provided it is not under consideration elsewhere.  The submission of manuscripts to NJPS will be taken to imply that no similar article has been, or in the event of acceptance by the journal, will be published elsewhere. Manuscripts should be written in clear concise English language, and should conform to the specified instructions listed below. Manuscripts which are not adequately prepared will be returned to the authors.

SUBMISSION

Online Submission

Only electronic version of manuscripts will be accepted. All articles should be electronically submitted into the online submission and tracking portal of NJPS at the following website: www.njps.physiologicalsociety.com. 

On-line manuscript submission: All manuscripts must be submitted on-line through the new Web site at www.ojshostng.com/index.php/njphysiologicalsciences. First-time users: Please click the Register button from the upper menu and enter the requested information. On successful registration, you will be sent an e-mail indicating your user name and password. Print a copy of this information for future reference. Note: If you have received an e-mail from us with an assigned user ID and password, or if you are a repeat user, do not register again. Just log in. Once you have an assigned ID and password, you do not have to re-register, even if your status changes (that is, author, reviewer, or editor). Authors: Please click the log-in button from the menu at the top of the page and log in to the system as an Author. Submit your manuscript according to the author instructions. You will be able to track the progress of your manuscript through the system. Submission as e-mail attachment: In case of difficulties in uploading manuscripts, authors may submit articles via e-mail to editornjps@gmail.com. This alternative submission mode implies that the uploading of such manuscripts will be done by the editorial office, without the authors enjoying certain privileges such as choosing their usernames and passwords.   

FORMAT OF MANUSCRIPTS

(a) Each manuscript must be typed on one side of A4 sized paper in double-line spacing with wide margins.

(b) The title page should include only the title, author’s names and institutions, and the name and address for correspondence.

(c) The page following the title page should contain a brief summary and up to six key words. A short running title should also be provided.

(d) Introduction: This should be as concise as possible and contain a clear statement of the aims of the research. Detailed historical introductions must be avoided.

(e) Methods: Sufficient detail must be provided to enable repetition of the work.

(f) Results: Should include experimental data and avoid discussion of significance.

(g) Discussion: Should be related to the results presented. Excessive speculations must be avoided.

(h) Acknowledgement: Should be brief.

(i) References: References in text should be cited by names of authors and year of publication. For papers written by three or more authors, use et al. At the end of the paper, references should be listed alphabetically. Papers by three or more authors should be listed chronologically. Opening and closing page numbers, full title of papers and names of all co-authors must be given. For example:

Journal:

Reid, H. L. and Obi, G. O. (1982). A study of erythrocyte deformability in sickle cell disease. Trop. Geogr. Med.34: 43 – 46.
Book:

Jennett, W. B. (1968). Blood flow techniques in clinical neurosurgery. In: Bain, W. H. and Harper, A. M. (eds). Blood flow through organs and tissues. E. S. Livingston Ltd., Edinburg, pp 349 – 354.

If more than one paper by the same author or team of authors was published in the same year, the letters a, b, and c etc, should follow the year – e.g. Adigun (1987a) in both the text and the references list.

(j) Figures and Tables: This should be kept to the minimum necessary to convey essential data. References to tables and figures should be in Arabic numerals. Their desired positions should be indicated on the left-hand margin of the manuscript. Good quality glossy prints of photographs and line drawings should be supplied in the desired final size. Letterings on line drawings should be at least 2mm high for clarity. Previously published figures are not acceptable, except if accompanied by written permission of the editors. The figure numbers, author’s names and “Top” should be indicated on the back of each illustration. Figure legends should be typed on separate sheets. Tables should be typed (also double-spaced) on separate sheets and numbered in sequence in Arabic numerals. A heading must be supplied with each table.

Short Communication: These should have a maximum 4,000 words (about 8 double-spaced typewritten pages) with a maximum of 2 figures. The format for regular papers should be followed; however references must be kept to a maximum of 10.

Electronic submission: Authors of accepted manuscripts are required to submit their final versions on diskette. 3.5″ IBM-formatted diskettes are required. Authors should also indicate the word processing software used (Word perfect, Microsoft Words are preferred) and file names. Figures and illustrations in Microsoft Excel are preferred. Only text files (without formats) should be submitted, figures and images scanned onto other packages will not be accepted.

REPRINTS: an electronic copy of the reprint file in PDF version will be sent along with copies of the journal to the corresponding author for distribution to co-authors. Additional copies should be ordered during final submission.
